There are definitely a whole lot more great bands out there, but unfortunately, we could only pick four of our favorites to kick off the series. As a 100% independent and self-funded project, there’s a limit to how much we can do. But we will get there slowly, some day. So here it is. You have seen the bands live on YouTube and Vimeo. Sapporo Safaris is a band of grand intent. Formed in early 2012, the band (otherwise fondly known as SaSa) is a mishmash collective of friends and siblings with one goal in common - to create that epic aural sound-scape that makes your heart soar with no boundaries. With their strength of eight comprising Kevin Ho (vocals), Royston Tan (guitar), Justin Seng (guitar), Edmund Tan (bass), Jacq Ho (vocals) Shaun Ho (drums), Cheryl Lim (horns) and SC Ong (horns), SaSa easily conjures up a signature sound of surging emotions and youthful vigor that makes them really stand out from the young crops emerging from the Singapore music scene.

For the finale episode of Kombi Sessions Season 1, SaSa (with the exception of Shaun who couldn’t be at the shoot) proved that no stage is too small for a big band like them. Watch the band scale down their arrangement for a stripped-down version of “Electric Handshakes,” and only to return to their true grandeur as they perform “An Island In You” in the middle of a mystical forest. We had to park the VW Kombi but like a good road trip, sometimes you just have to stop and soak in all the beautiful sights and sounds around you.

After 4 months of getting bands to perform in a VW Kombi, we rounded up all bands - Cashew Chemists, Pleasantry & Sapporo Safaris (with the exception of Pastelpower who’s away in the States) from Season 1 for a Wrap Up Party at Kombi Rocks on 061212! The biggest shout out goes to Pearl and Hai of Kombi Rocks for their love and support for local music! And of course, to all the cool kids who turned up and packed the place with your cheers and applause, you guys have made our Season 1 Wrap Up Party very very very cool indeed!
